Costings

Ok, taking a working holiday in Australia all sounds pretty good but your're probably thinking 'how is the money situation going to work?'

Go Workabout generally charges AUD$699 per person for a 'Complete Working Holiday Starter Pack', but there are obviously other costs involved in taking a working holiday in Australia. The following table gives an indication of how much everything will cost and how much you will earn. Please remember that this table is based on an average pay, at an average amount of work per month and is only intended to give some guidance.

Daily costs whilst travelling

Some backpackers in Australia travel as cheaply as $25 a day, however, a budget of around $40 per day would be comfortable.

Of course this depends on how much transport you are taking, how much you are eating out and how much partying you are doing!

Remember to add onto this average daily cost any major traveling costs (ie flights and major bus / train trips) and tours or activities that you might do.

Daily costs whilst working

Generally, while you are working your daily costs are much lower than when you are travelling. Accommodation is usually cheaper when you are staying in one place for a certain period of time. Each job has different accommodation and food arrangements and therefore you will have varying daily costs. However, as an indication, travellers could budget on a cost of $10 - $30 a day whilst working.

See our 'Cost of Living Section' for more info about budgeting.

Value for money?

At Go Workabout we believe that our products are good value - otherwise we don't include them.

We believe that the 'Complete Working Holiday Starter Pack' and the 'Working Holiday Makers Necessities Pack' will literally save you days and days of administration, and with our smart travelling tips, it will save you money from the moment you step off the plane to after you arrive back home.

For example (and without giving too much away!), Joe Bloggs steps off the plane and is rather tired after the long flight, so he takes the expensive bus to the centre of town and goes to the first hostel he finds... He does not realise he could have taken the bus around the corner and gone to the other hostel and saved a packet!

Joe Bloggs then has to make several trips to the bank to open his bank account. Each time he is missing one of those silly items the bank requires, each trip taking a big chunk out of his day, especially after having to line up in the bank queue when he could be at the beach... In the mean time he has no option but to pay the massive transaction costs for using his home bank account for every transaction. Joe Bloggs, who did not even know what a 'tax file number' was, starts working and gets taxed at the highest tax rate (48%) or has to wait several weeks to be paid while he gets his tax file number sorted out. Worst of all, little did this traveller realise that he could get his Superannuation back after leaving Australia and then, without even knowing, loses a bonus 9% of his total pay...

If you read the Go Workabout Starter Book (included in the Complete Working Holiday Starter Pack) and follow its instructions, you won't be standing behind Mr Bloggs in the bank queue or forking out unnecessary cash, you will be working on your tan at the beach!
