Can I get a visa to work in Australia? If so, how much does it cost and how do I get it?

Australia has arrangements with 19 countries where passport holders from those 19 countries can get an ‘Australian Working Holiday Visa’. This is a special visa for 18 - 30 year olds that allows entry into Australia for 1 year (extendable to 2 years) and allows the holder to work with a limitation of 6 months in any one job.

The 19 countries that have access to this visa are:

United Kingdom, Canada, Netherlands, Japan, Republic of Ireland, Republic of Korea, Malta, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Hong Kong, Finland, Cyprus, France, Italy, Belgium, Estonia and Taiwan.

If you are not eligible for a Working Holiday Visa, it is possible to work in Australia on a Student visa but you must arrange this with your education institution. There are also possibilities for passport holders from Iran, Thailand, Chile, Turkey and Bangladesh to apply for a special ‘Work and Holiday Visa’ (which is different from the Working Holiday Visa).
For more information on visas and the cost and how to get them, see the 'Visas' section of this website.

Can I take more than one job with Go Workabout?

Yes. If you wish to pre-arrange more than one job in Australia you can do this with Go Workabout. The best way to do this is to apply for the first job as normal and send us an email letting us know that you want more work. Or just let us know when we contact you to talk about your work options.

Send your email to info@goworkabout.com

Once you are in Australia, you can always contact Go Workabout to arrange more work also.

Why arrange a bank account before I leave home?

You can transfer your money to Australia before you leave – that way your funds will be available when you arrive and you won't need to bother with traveller's cheques etc. You will also avoid transaction costs for using a foreign bank card in Australia. Lastly, you will avoid the hassle of opening a bank account in Australia, arranging for funds to be transferred, waiting for them to clear etc.

What is a tax file number and why do I need one?

To work in Australia you need a ‘tax file number’ or else you will be taxed the emergency rate of 48.5%. In addition, without a tax file number, you will not be able to claim your tax back when you leave. Save yourself some trouble and organise it before you get to Australia!

What about Accommodation?

Depending on the job and the accommodation options, Go Workabout will either pre-arrange accommodation or supply you with a list of accommodation options in the Go Workabout Starter Pack booklet.

If accommodation is not included in the job you apply for, the list of accommodation options will include several budget options in the area, the price, our comments and their contact details.

I want to travel and work with a friend or a group of friends, is this possible?

Yes! You can email info@goworkabout.com and let us know who you would like to travel and work with.

We will then do our best to put you in similar jobs, locations or accommodation.

How much is all this going to cost me?

Go Workabout charges depend on what service you take, see the 'Services' section for more details on our charges.

For more detailed information on costs of flights, visas, travelling... and how much you will earn with superannuation and after tax, see the 'Costs' section.

How much money will I earn?

Go Workabout only supplies jobs that pay well. If the job does not pay well, we don’t have anything to do with it.

Every job has its own circumstances but most jobs pay between $15 - $20 per hour. You will also earn 9% superannuation on top of this which you can get when you leave Australia (this is all detailed in the Go Workabout Starter Pack). Including the 9% superannuation, most jobs will pay between $16.35 - $21.80 per hour.

Most jobs require 40 hours work a week but sometimes you can work more if you wish. Some people occasionally choose to work up to 60 hours a week so they can earn some serious money!
