If you have worked in Australia and paid tax, you are required to lodge a Tax Return. A Tax Return is a document given to the Australian Tax Office declaring your total income, deductions, taxes withheld and various other things.

By lodging a Tax Return, you can claim back extra tax you may have paid to the Australian Tax Office whilst working. Generally, when you do your Tax Return, this results in a tax refund – which means you get some of the taxes you have paid back!

When should I do a Tax Return?

The financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June each year and you are supposed to lodge a tax return at the end of each financial year between 1 July and 31 October. You can lodge it after this date, but the Australian Tax Office may fine you (although, they generally don't). However, if you use our Registered Tax Agent you can lodge outside this time period without being fined.

If you are leaving Australia or have finished working in Australia, you can lodge a tax return at any time.

How can I lodge a Tax Return?

You can prepare and lodge your own Tax Return by going to the Australian Tax Office website, but unless you know what you're doing with taxes in Australia, you are better off getting a Registered Tax Agent to do it for you.

By getting a tax expert to do your Tax Return, you generally get more tax back as they know the rules and can claim the biggest refund possible. They charge you a fee, but the extra tax they get back usually leaves you better off than if you did it yourself... And it's much easier!

Go Workabout's Registered Tax Agent specialises in doing tax returns for backpackers and working holiday visa holders. They are the cheapest we know and will get the maximum tax refund you are entitled to!
