Why Do I Need A Tax File Number?

Anyone who intends to work in Australia will need a Tax File Number. If you don’t have a Tax File Number you will be taxed the emergency rate (48.5%) on your pay instead of the usual tax rate of 15 – 30%.

Why Can TFN's Be a Problem?

Travellers sometimes have problems arranging their own TFNs because:

• Complicated process - many travellers are unsure how to go about it.
• No permanent address - after you apply for a TFN, it will take between 7 and 28 days or more for it to be issued. This can be a problem because you need a permanent postal address in Australia to which your TFN can be sent. If you are traveling from place to place, it will be difficult to know which address to have it posted to since the issuing time varies.
• Emergency tax - your TFN may take so long to be issued that you end up paying emergency tax for a period on your pay.

How Do I Get One

3) Get your Tax File Number delivered

You will receive your Tax File Number details by email approximately 10 - 14 days after your arrival in Australia. We only issue your Tax File Number after you arrive in Australia as Australian law requires this.

When Should I Get One?

You can arrange your TFN as far in advance as you like! We will have our systems ready to process your TFN the day you arrive. As normal, it's best to get these things organised and out of the way so you don’t have to worry about it again!
