Why Harvest?
People often ask why they should do harvest work like picking and packing fruit. They say "picking grapes is boring" or "it's too much hard work..."
This page is here to tell you why harvest work is not as bad as it may sound and why we actually recommend it! Don't believe us? Read on...
Good working enviroment
In many jobs you will find youself working alone or with a few other people. Harvest work is an exception because it generally requires many people or teams of people to get the work done.
In our harvest jobs, you will be working with 20 to 40 other people, most of whom will be similar to yourself. They will be travellers just like yourselves which means they will probably also be intending to have a good time!
In addition to this, you will probably be staying onsite with these people where it is impossible NOT to have fun! Nearly every member of the Go Workabout team has worked in the very jobs we arrange, so we can vouch for it!
Cash up quickly!
We won't deny it - the work isn't that easy. But it isn't that hard either! You certainly do work hard for your money, but at the end of the day you will probably end up saving more money than the average traveller working in the city...
Why..? Firstly, the pay is decent. It's a decent wage for a decent day's work (we make sure of this!). Secondly, you will save money on the cheap onsite accommodation which is often little more than AU$10 per day.
You also have no transport costs to work each day and you can share the costs of food with housemates. Lastly, there's normally extra work available if you wish to work more hours and earn more money.
If cashing up quickly and saving money is your goal, harvest work is where it's at!
Get outdoors!
Australia is all about the great outdoors - it is famous for beaches, the outback and Aussie rules football of course. Harvest work provides the perfect opportunity to get outdoors Aussie style and work in the fresh air (don't forget your sunscreen!).
You'll get fit and get a golden Aussie tan at the same time - but the best thing about working outdoors is the cold beer and dip in the ocean at the end of the day.
See the real Australia!
Harvest work is mostly in the regional areas, which is often where you'll see the best parts of Australia. You could be picking grapes only minutes away from the the Ningaloo Reef and migrating Whale Sharks, or harvesting fruit near the towering forests and incredible natural beauty of the South West.
Harvest work will provide you with a great Australian experience, living and working on the land and making life long friends in the process!
Visa Extension!
One of the best things about harvest work is that it qualifies you to extend your Australian Working Holiday Visa for another year. In order to qualify, you need to do 3 months of seasonal work in a regional area.
In other words - harvest work. Remember, you can only get the Working Holiday Visa once, which means this type of work is the only way to extend your time in Australia!
Something different...
Doing something like picking grapes in Australia for a month or two is a unique experience that you will definitely not regret doing. It is not only different - most people find it very fulfilling once it's finished; especially those who have stayed for the entire harvest from beginning to end.
By the end of it you will have worked hard (played even harder!), made loads of money and even more friends, leaving you alot richer for the experience...
And that's why you should do harvest work!
